I was speaking with a client the other day about how excited she is to welcome her college freshman home for the long holiday break. It seems only yesterday this couple started planning for the often overwhelming price tag attached to a child’s hopes and dreams. Our conversation has inspired this gentle reminder to all parents with children in their high school years that it is never too early to start planning.
Specifically for high school seniors, now is the time to research and apply for scholarships. Your child’s guidance counselor can help to identify scholarships within reach. Billions in free federal grant money goes unclaimed each year, often because students are unaware or do not take the time to fill out the free application. Make sure your child has submitted their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to avoid missing out on any financial assistance available.
As with anything else in life, the more time you devote to getting a plan in place, the less time you will waste on worrying about how things will unfold. Wishing all those college kids happy homecomings this holiday season!!
